DIY - Sock monkey

Ebony is going through a 'monkey' phase whereby she runs around the house, shopping centre, parks, pretty much everywhere, imitating a monkey. She has the sound affects & almost has the arm actions down pat (her arm actions are more like a gorilla beating it's chest at the moment). So I thought I would make her, her very own monkey to play with at home.

If you have read any of my past DIY craft posts, you will know that my attention to detail is lacking, so please don't look too closely at my stitching! This is a really quick project that took me an (uninterrupted) hr to make. Here's how to make your very own sock monkey, for your little monkey...

Sock Monkey
You will need;
  • A pair of socks
  • 2 buttons (for eyes)
  • Needle
  • Thread  - I used black for the eyes & mouth & white for all of the other stitching
  • Stuffing
  1. First, you will need to cut each sock carefully into the shapes shown in the diagram above, to create the body parts.
  2. Take the pieces for the ears, body, tail & arms & turn them inside out before sewing. Sew along the edges & then turn them back over when done. Fill with stuffing & then neatly sew the remaining edges of the arm & tail.
  3. Attach the completed parts to the body.
  4. Fill the mouth with stuffing & stitch onto the face.
  5. Sew on the buttons to the face as eyes. Stitch black thread along the middle of the mouth to create the lip.
Voila, your very own sock monkey!
